Artist Spotlight: Joy Laforme

What does art mean to you?

Joy Laforme Sketch

For me, art is visual storytelling. I love the idea that I can create stories with my work, and others create their own stories from my work as well. It's so meaningful to hear that something I've created reminds someone of a memory or a dream, and they start telling me about it - creating and telling their own story from my work.

What are some other ways you like to show off your artistic talents?

Digital Sketch by Joy LaformeWell, I love dabbling in lots of different art forms - but I don't know that I hold an abundance of talent in them - ha! I love knitting, sewing, tap dancing, painting on wooden objects and refurbishing old vintage finds. These are art forms I enjoy for myself and they fuel my work by allowing me to play with color and shape in ways that are not directly tied to my job.

What are some things that give you inspiration?

Joy Laforme Detail from Merry Market

I have always been a very observant person, and I think that I notice a lot of small, unexpected details in simple parts of everyday life - a lot of that gives me daily inspiration. Beyond that, I read lots of books, watch movies and enjoy others' creative works. Seeing other creatives' work in whatever field they are in (music, dance, film) and their process is immensely inspirational.

Why is art important in everyday life?

I believe that art helps us process the realities of what is, and see the magic of what could be. It's a form of therapy for now, and a glimmer of hope for days to come.
